Conor McGregor | Logan Paul

What We Know?

Even the holidays couldn’t keep the MMA rumors at bay as a potential boxing match between Conor McGregor and Logan Paul is rumored to be in the works for 2025. After news broke of the rumored match, McGregor has even claimed the fight is in “preliminary agreements” to take place in India, backed by the Ambani family. This exhibition match has stirred quite a bit of excitement and skepticism alike, with McGregor not having fought in the UFC since 2021 and having recently been the center of a very controversial sexual assault court case in Ireland.
While it’s still early days and no concrete details like the date or weight class have been confirmed, McGregor’s announcement has certainly captured the attention of fans and critics:
  • Location: Rumored to be in India at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium
  • Payday: Rumored purses of $250 million each
  • When: Rumored to take place in 2025
  • UFC: Still under contract, McGregor plans to return to MMA after this boxing exhibition

How Did We Get Here?

McGregor, once considered to be the pinnacle of MMA success, has experienced a significant decline in both his professional and personal life. After becoming the first UFC fighter to hold two division titles simultaneously, McGregor’s career took a turn following his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather in 2017. His return to the UFC was marred by legal issues, multiple arrests for assault, and more recently, a civil court ruling in Ireland where he was found liable for sexual assault.

McGregor’s luck inside of the Octagon hasn’t been much better. Not having fought since 2021, McGregor frequently posts pictures on social media showcasing his partying instead of his training. 1-3 in the UFC since his championship reign, McGregor might be considered desperate for a win by preying on an ex-Youtube star.

Standing opposite McGregor, Logan Paul’s venture into boxing began in 2018 when he faced fellow YouTuber KSI in an amateur bout that ended in a majority draw. This match set the stage for the influencer boxing era. Their rematch in 2019 was Paul’s professional debut, where he lost by a split decision. Despite the loss, Paul’s profile in boxing continued to grow.

In 2021, Paul too took on an exhibition match against Floyd Mayweather Jr., which, although not officially counted on his record, showcased his ability to draw massive pay-per-view audiences. Paul’s most recent boxing match was in 2023 against MMA fighter Dillon Danis, where he won by disqualification. His boxing career, while unconventional, has been marked by high-profile fights that capitalized on his social media fame, blending entertainment with sport just like McGregor is famous for.

With the Paul brothers riding the momentum of their social media boxing legacy, their long calls for a McGregor match may finally be answered in the New Year as The Notorious grows increasingly desperate for a win.

Why We Don’t Need This?

Rather than returning to combat sports for the first time in over 4-years to fight a former Youtube star, wouldn’t it make more sense for McGregor to first return to the UFC where he is still under contract? TUF 31 STILL hasn’t been resolved, leaving fans wondering if they will ever see McGregor vs Michael Chandler. Ignoring UFC fighters constantly calling him out, claiming to still want UFC championship status but not having fought since 2021, and deciding against laying low after a very high-profile sexual assault case just doesn’t seem like the best move for McGregor right now.

Giving Logan Paul the stage to fight a UFC legend like McGregor will only further explode the already annoying influencer boxing scene. A win over McGregor in 2016 would’ve been HUGE for Paul, but does a win over the current Conor McGregor even give the same career boost?

The world just witnessed Jake Paul defeat Mike Tyson on an international stage. The majority of fans/critics responses were clearly not very supportive of the event or Jake after the win. Why would a win over McGregor be any different for Logan? And oppositely, what good does McGregor think a win over a Youtube star will do for his legacy?

What Should We Expect?

This potential boxing match is one of the most predictable fights to ever be made. The Paul brothers have themselves a fantastic formula for growing their legacies and they are setting McGregor up for another rinse n’ repeat.

While everyone involved is likely doing this for a massive payday, the Paul’s still pick their opponents very strategically hoping for wins. For the most part, they only fight older MMA fighters outside of prime, who are out of their element in a boxing ring. Sure, McGregor has boxing experience of his own, but Logan Paul still has double the boxing matches the 7-year senior in McGregor has.

Expect a close match that almost certainly goes the distance. Logan Paul likely edges out a close decision that will send McGregor back to the depths of his Black Forge Inn. Despite the obvious outcome that this match presents, we can all still hope the fight never gets made in the first place!
