Old Flames Reignited

The feud between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov has flared up again, this time on social media. McGregor took to Twitter to mock Khabib’s financial situation, suggesting he was looking to buy Khabib’s family home due to alleged financial troubles.

In response, Khabib has been critical of Irish fighters, including McGregor, essentially downplaying their skills and accomplishments in the sport. McGregor has also accused Khabib and his team of holding drug testers hostage amongst other things, though specifics are lacking in these claims.

After more poking from Khabib, McGregor took it upon himself to post a video highlighting his own achievements in the UFC. During the second half of the video, McGregor instead shows the “boring” Dagestan wrestling style from Khabib.

Despite the two having fought 6 years ago at UFC 229, their ongoing hatred for each other doesn’t look to be going away anytime soon. Since the start of their personal issues, religion & nationality have always come into play, sometimes getting very ugly. This just seems to be another case of history repeating itself.

Ireland vs Dagestan

When you look at the contrast between Irish and Dagestani fighters in MMA, you’re essentially comparing two opposing fighting styles. On one side, Irish fighters like McGregor and Ian Garry have popularized a more striking-heavy style, favoring the big KO over a submission.

While Irish fighters often aim to keep the fight standing, Dagestani fighters prefer bringing the fight to the mat, where they can use their superior wrestling and submission skills. This contrast not only defines their styles but also the narrative of their fights, where the excitement often lies in whether the Irish fighter can keep it standing or if the Dagestani can impose his grappling game.

Battlefield is Set

Although McGregor & Khabib will never fight again, there are still plenty of fights the can determine which region produces better fighters. Some of the most notable examples are Ian Garry (Ireland) continuing to fight at the top of the UFC welterweight division along with Islam Makhachev & Umar Nurmagomedov (Dagestan) both fighting for UFC gold at UFC 311.

Bellator also pits Ireland & Dagestan directly against each other on January 25th as Ireland’s Paul Hughes takes on Dagestan’s Usman Nurmagomedov for lightweight gold! This will be a classic striker vs grappler fight as 1/3 of Nurmagomedov’s wins have been by submission and 6 out of 13 of Hughes’s wins have been by KO.

Until fans get some answers, the age old question remains. Who is better: Ireland or Dagestan?
