Henry Cejudo | Ice Cream
Why Henry Cejudo Is Fighting for Ice Cream
Henry Cejudo is one of the most accomplished combat athletes in history. An Olympic gold medalist and two-division UFC champion, his journey from a rough childhood to the pinnacle of sports is nothing short of legendary. But beyond the accolades and the bravado of his Triple C persona lies a story that encapsulates his resilience, hunger, and competitive spirit—one that involves, of all things, ice cream.

The Origins of a Champion
Before Henry Cejudo became a household name in MMA, he was just a kid growing up in a tough environment. As described in his book Wrestling for My Life, Cejudo and his brothers were raised in challenging circumstances, often struggling to make ends meet. They lived in New Mexico, where gangs and crime were part of daily life. But among the chaos, young Henry found a unique motivator: ice cream.
There was a time when drug lords would come to the town where Henry lived and offer ice cream as a reward for street fights. They would encourage kids to compete, and the winners would get a sweet treat. For Cejudo and his brothers, this was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. They would fight each other, fight the other kids—whoever they had to—to stock up on as much ice cream as possible.

The Olympics: Fighting for More Than Just Gold
Fast forward to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Cejudo entered the tournament as a massive underdog. At the time, he was ranked somewhere around 30th in the world. In one of the biggest matches of his life, he faced off against the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the world in the quarterfinals or semifinals. Against all odds, he won.
After the match, a reporter asked him how he handled the pressure of being such a massive underdog. Cejudo’s response?
“I’m just out here fighting for ice cream right now.”
It was a simple but powerful statement. While his competitors might have been wrestling for national pride, fame, or legacy, Cejudo had a different mindset. He had spent his entire life fighting to survive, fighting for opportunities, and sometimes, fighting for something as simple as ice cream. The pressure of an Olympic tournament wasn’t going to shake someone who had been battling since childhood.

Another Fight
This Saturday, Henry Cejudo steps back into the Octagon to face rising contender Song Yadong in a crucial bantamweight showdown. At 38 years old, Cejudo is looking to bounce back from his recent loss to Merab Dvalishvili and prove he’s still a top contender in one of the UFC’s most competitive divisions.
Yadong, a dangerous striker with knockout power, represents a tough challenge. The 27-year-old Chinese fighter has been climbing the ranks with impressive performances and sees this fight as his chance to take out a legend.
For Cejudo, this isn’t just another fight—it’s another moment to prove doubters wrong. Whether he’s fighting for championships, legacy, or even just the thrill of competition, one thing remains certain: Henry Cejudo still fights like the kid who once battled for ice cream.
