TRT in MMA
The UFC and the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) initially permitted TRT exemptions for fighters with documented medical needs. However, the system was heavily exploited, leading to accusations of performance enhancement. Fighters using TRT often had significantly higher testosterone levels than their opponents, leading to unfair advantages in strength, recovery, and aggression. This led the NSAC to ban TRT entirely on February 27, 2014.
What is TRT? Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a medical treatment designed to restore testosterone levels in individuals who suffer from low testosterone (hypogonadism). In professional sports, particularly mixed martial arts (MMA), TRT was a controversial topic as it allowed athletes to use synthetic testosterone, often leading to performance enhancement.
Benefits of TRT in Fighting:
- Increased Strength & Power: Higher testosterone levels contribute to greater muscle mass and overall strength.
- Faster Recovery: TRT users recover from training and injuries at a significantly faster rate.
- Enhanced Aggression & Stamina: Increased testosterone can result in heightened aggression and sustained energy levels, crucial for MMA competition.

The End of TRT in MMA
Since the TRT ban in 2014, fighters have had to rely on natural testosterone levels. Some, like Belfort and Sonnen, saw a sharp decline in performance, while others retired altogether. The ban was a necessary step in ensuring a more level playing field in MMA.
TRT was one of the most controversial subjects in MMA, with many arguing it was necessary for older fighters, while others claimed it was just another loophole for doping. Regardless, its ban changed the landscape of the sport, forcing fighters to either adapt or fade away from competition.
